She pretended a teary 'goodbye' to Nan and Elmer as she watched the train disappear from view. Inside the trunk were the treasures of a family separated by death and tragedy.

In Book 5, Timothy's Home, the trunk plays a whole other role as a rescue vessel for a young boy.
